Basic Information

First name
Allan
I Can Speak

I Would Describe Myself As
I'm not loud or boisterous. I tend to skirt the action and observe people around me, because I simply find people fascinating. As well, I can learn something new from every person I meet, which makes meeting people who were previously strangers to me, an enjoyable experience, and I am quite pleased when an acquaintance and I turn a corner while walking together and we call each other, "friend".

I will go very far out of my way to help or protect those whom I consider to be my friends. I won't go so far as to say that I am a loyal friend--that makes me sound more like an Irish Setter, and I would like to believe that I am still more intelligent than a pooch. Well, at least a little, anyways. ::: crossing fingers :::

I haven't been on a date in something like 40 years by now--I have not even the slightest idea....something that allows me to concentrate upon the person I am with.

Through my short time on this planet, I have discovered that we--all of us doing our very important things--we are more similar to one-another, than we are different from each other.

My Goal In Life Is
A funny thing happened to me,when I was on my way to reaching the age of 8.

Back then, my Dad was preparing to deploy to Viet Nam to fly rescue missions North of the DMZ. We had spent the better part of my school year in the Florida panhandle, where my Dad trained on flying Sikorsky helicopters to be able to fly those missions, and I spent much of my time trying to figure out the school teachers.

One evening, after my Dad returned from his day at Eglin Air Force Base, we sat out on Destin Beach (whitest sand I've ever seen) and talked for a while.

Somehow the talk wound through the territory of things that I wanted to do or make, and why. I told him that I had seen a flying squirrel on some nature program on TV and, tying that into the training he was going through, I told him that I thought that a flight suit that had canvas stretched between the arms and legs, like the flaps of loose skin on a flying squirrel, would allow a parachutist to glide long distances before opening his parachute.

To put paid to my idea, I showed him a small sketch of what I was talking about.

He looked it over and handed it back to me, saying that it wouldn't work.

I won't tell you that my little heart was broken, and that I lost millions of dollars of future income because of it (well, maybe the last part is actually true, but I'm not fussing over it...not this many years later).

My Dad did help me learn a very important lesson, though, along with many, many other people that I have met during my life: When you come up with an idea that inspires you, that advances a new and innovative concept, which can help people... don't listen to the naysayers. As much as you are able, run with your idea, and make it a reality.

When I have done that, since that day, I have enjoyed those immediate moments of being alive, and have looked forward to the fruit of my labors.

My Idea Of Fun Is
Taking a long drive, deliberately getting myself completely lost discovering someplace new, and meeting new people.

Now, recently, I decided that, since I was too busy working back when I was 15 years-old, I completely abandoned my desire to learn to play the guitar, electric tenor, and various incarnations of the electric bass.

So, now I spend my time trying to get my fingers limbered-up enough to work the fretboard the way it wants me to, while listening to music that I listened to, back in the 70's and 80's, and trying to keep up with the people who have that talent.

It can be frustrating at times, because my fingers are not as flexible as I would like them to be, but they are starting to do what I want them to do, and I'm having more fun than I would have back when I was 15.

I know that making mistakes and not being perfect are the cobble stones on the road to learning a new skill....and that is an enjoyable way to spend some of my spare time that I find in my day.
